Maritime Consultant

 Gavel & Scales.
Methodology
Not all maritime consulting engagements involve the same methodology. Three components critical to success for almost all engagements are - investigate, analze and report.

 Document Search - KCT.
Investigate
Facts regarding the incident are gathered. The initial source is from depositions and interrogatories provided by the client (attorney). Inspections of the vessel(s) involved and site of the incident usually reveal useful data not garnered from reports. Internet searches of documents, equipment specifications, and other subjects supplement the data provided by the client.

 Transmission Cable.
Analyze
Once sufficient data is obtained, analysis of the incident begins. Testing of equipment may be involved as in the case of the throttle cable shown here. The objective is to form an opinion of the incident. The opinion may include how and/or why the incident happened; whether it was avoidable; industry standards; governemnt regulations; and other components as dictated by the facts of the incident and the client. This is a never ending process. Additional data (facts) can change the results of the analysis and therefore the opinion. Capt. Daley's opinions are always given based on current known data subject to change in the light of new information.

 Graphic of Control Head.
Report
The opinion must be communicated. The report may be as simple as a phone call to the client or as complex as trial testimony in front of judge and jury with computer-generated graphics. A report is usually written. The purpose of the report is to explain and educate regarding an issue not commonly understood. Capt. Daley's reports usually contain copious photos, charts, maps, graphics and other representations facilitating the educational process.
